I love dem Tarheels....

Disclaimer: The following blog contains material that describes my surgery experience in detail. I right this blog as a history for me, myself, and I.

Night before Surgery(Wed): I've been nervous ever since my doctor set my surgery date a month ago. I've been very emotional at times because this is serious. They are cutting my gut open. Life gets a new perspective when your life is in someone else's hands. Soon my fibroids (named Laverne and Shirley) will be gone. Praise God for favors and a good sleeping pill.

Before Surgery (Thu): I had a good prayer circle with me while we waited an extra 3 1/2 hours to start the surgery, due to a delay in a previous surgery. It was a long day considering I hadn't eaten since 8pm the previous night. We held hands and my phenomenal Aunt Zine prayed over my surgery....I had a unexpected calmness come over me. I went to the pre-op room to get the IV started. The tried once in my right hand, but apparently I have what's called 'rolling veins', meaning the needle missed the vein. They tried again in my left hand...missed the vein, then again in the right hand....missed the vein. Yep, these hurt. They finally decided to just give me the gas and do the IV once I'm passed out. Note to self: skip the IV and just get the gas first. The last thing I remember was some smelly gas, and then I was in la-la land.

After Surgery (Thu): Laverne and Shirley have left the building. It was nice to be drugged up. It was weird to be out of control, even for a short period of time. The catheter was an experience...I wasn't sure to push the pee or not push the pee...surprise, surprise...no pushing needed. Lots of visitors and much appreciated support. This was the first time in my life that I can remember not having an appetite...I finally found a diet that works.

Fri: I couldn't really sleep last night. I never really could get comfortable due to the soreness. But it was comforting to know that my loving husband was sleeping on a cot next to my bed. He's a sweetheart and a true blessing...I can't wait to eat some of this cooking, this hospital food is terrible. Although, the chicken broth was soothing on my scratchy throat as a side effect from the breathing tube used during surgery. The staples in my belly look crazy. They literally look like staples used for paper. I'm still sore, but the drugs are good. The fabulous bouquet of roses from my dad was a nice pick me up.

Sat: I really didn't get good sleep, but Andre was still hanging in there with me on the cot. He's a trooper. I was able to eat real food today, although I couldn't finish most of the meals. UNC HealthCare had decided to they had enough of my money, so they discharged me that afternoon. Most of the nursing staff was cool except for a few employees, but overall my hospital stay was acceptable. Got to love dem' heels.

To be fair, your veins are really small for a normal adult. You have the veins of a 12 year old. I hurt hurting you and am truly sorry. I will say that the rest of your anesthetic went perfectly. Textbook even.
